Careless and Hazardous Drinking, an Enabling Spouse, and Encouragement for Positive Change and Successful Alcohol Addiction Counseling
By Chief Procrastinator | March 30, 2010
It took several years but Emily at long last made up her mind that she had enough with her husband’s abusive drinking. She was fed up from seeing Barry come home in the early hours of the morning from drinking instead of spending much needed time with her and their three daughters. She was also sick of the third DUI Barry recently received. Moreover she was drained from manufacturing excuses for Barry when he couldn’t make it to work on time due to his problems with drinking. Not only this but she was anxious about the fact that their relationship was getting worse due to Barry’s careless and hazardous drinking. And lastly she was sick and tired of the risky financial jam into which he had put his family because of his excessive and careless drinking behavior.
When Careless and Abusive Drinking Motivates a Person to do Something Helpful About a Person’s Problem Drinking
One Saturday afternoon when Emily was pondering what she could do about her husband’s careless and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she honestly had to do something constructive to cut into the unhealthy cycle of Barry’s hazardous and excessive drinking behavior.
So she looked on the web under “alcohol rehabilitation” and located scores of treatment clinics that were all located less than 20 miles away from where she and her husband lived.
Due to the fact that she didn’t know anything about these treatment facilities, she finally made up her mind to call some of them and ask some important questions. When she called each rehabilitation center she introduced herself and said that her husband was exhibiting excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior. She also articulated that Barry, her spouse, had an outstanding health insurance program at his place of employment and that inpatient or outpatient alcohol rehabilitation would be covered if a health care practitioner in the company health program initiated the treatment.
At one treatment clinic, Emily was stunned that she was able to speak directly with a physician who suggested that she come in to describe her husband’s careless and hazardous drinking behavior in more detail.
Emily Talks to a Healthcare Practitioner About Her Husband’s Irresponsible Drinking
When Emily got to the rehabilitation center, she filled out some required forms and then after approximately ten or fifteen minutes got to see a counselor.
After listening to Emily describe her husband’s unhealthy and excessive drinking, the therapist in an encouraging but firm manner told Emily how she may have played a major role in her husband’s hazardous and careless drinking through the years by making excuses for him instead of letting him experience the results of his unhealthy drinking behavior.
Emily Finds Out She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Harmful Drinking
Stated more precisely, the physician stated to Emily that she may have been accidentally enabling Barry’s hazardous drinking behavior. The counselor also stressed the fact that although Emily would not be able to control her husband’s behavior, with the support and guidance of the treatment team at the rehabilitation center she would not only be able to learn how to refrain from contributing to Barry’s abusive drinking but she would also be able to learn how to motivate him to schedule an appointment at the rehab clinic so that he could go over his unhealthy and excessive drinking behavior with a healthcare practitioner.
Fortunately after Emily discussed this with Barry, and he saw that she was not joking, Barry told her that he had been quite disturbed by his hazardous and careless drinking behavior and that he was quite relieved to hear that Emily wanted to do something constructive about his hazardous and careless drinking behavior. As a result, he scheduled an appointment to see a doctor at the local alcohol rehab clinic.
Barry Agrees to Meet With a Healthcare Professional About His Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking
While simply calling a treatment facility does not mean that a person’s careless drinking behavior will become less problematic or that one’s warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one manifests will simply go away, making an appointment is undeniably a much needed component in the rehab process. And because Barry was serious about getting quality assistance for his careless drinking, the likelihood of a successful recovery was considerably enhanced.
