Adopting The ‘I Want’ Approach
By Chief Procrastinator | March 30, 2010
Thinking “I must” is not a useful approach to getting our body to follow through with what we ideally want it to do.
However, we can change our unwanted habits and compulsions by simply thinking “I want”. It can help your head, heart and body to synchronize. This spiritual pact gives us the power to effect change in our behavioral patterns.
Saying to yourself “I mustn’t be late” won’t work. It is harsh and negative. If you feel like you’re forcing yourself not to do something then some unfortunate quirk of nature makes us more likely to actually end up doing it.
Not much better is “I must be early”. Our actions and free will are still enroached upon and so again it’s unlikely to be effective.
This line of reasoning goes something like this: I mustn’t be late because I will get a scolding, or I will have to pay a fine, or they will put a black mark on my record book or they may not allow me to enter the room.
A better line of approach would be “I want to be punctual”. It is gentler and more in line with the spiritual laws we all have built within us.
This works using the following reasoning… I want to be on time because other people and their time are things that I have respect for. If everyone were early, we can start on time and end on time, we can go on to do other things, be more productive, and we can go home to be with our families.
This, in the long run, is a more powerful and spiritually persuasive line of reasoning.
When more and more people in the group recognize, appreciate and put into practice the value of punctuality, and the positivity spreads. Therefore, whether we realise it or not, our actions and attitudes can trigger a positive spiral or a negative spiral.
The more self aware we are, the better able we are to shape the signals we are putting out to the world.
I came across the law of attraction a few years ago and gaining an understanding of it has greatly improved my life. I created a website on it and included my own mind movies, which you can find here : http://www.free-mind-movies.info
